2017 Fantasy Nascar Preview (Vegas)

Welcome to TimersSports

Fantasy Nascar Preview -

1-Jamie Mac: The 1 car was very fast at Atlanta and showed good top 10 speed all weekend. Ended up finishing 10th. He should be able to keep the momentum going, too. On top of that, JMac has been running well at Vegas in recent seasons as well. Over his past three races here, he has compiled 14.0 average finish with 16.3 average running position and 74.0 driver rating. Jamie has been consistent with his finishes in recent seasons at Vegas. Over his past four races here, he has finished in the 13th-16th place range. In his past 5 races here (back to 2012), he has finished 16th or better in every race. In his past two races (2015 and 2016), he has finishes of 16th and 11th. He wasn't very compeittive in last season's event. Both CGR cars struggled to do much, but the organization seemed off until like June anyways. Both Chip Ganassi Racing cars showed a lot of speed in the first two races. Can they make it three straight? Guess we will find out this weekend!

2-Brad Keselowski: Keselowski is coming off his first win at Atlanta Motor Speedway and will look for some more at Vegas! He has a lot of momentum after his win last weekend and has ran incredibly well at Vegas in recent seasons. Over the past three Vegas races, he has compiled 3.0 average finish with 7.0 average running position and 119.8 driver rating. In his past 4 races, he has compiled 4 straight top 7 finishes. While, he has won the past two of three races at Vegas. Including win this race just last season. I consider Vegas as one of Brad's best tracks on the schedule in terms of pure stats. I also believe that the Penske Fords are little ahead of the competition this season. The HMS cars and JGR cars as a whole were a little off last weekend at Atlanta. While the Penske cars were on point in terms of speed. It will be interesting to see, if that will continue this weekend.

3-Austin Dillon: Austin Dillon was having a strong run last weekend at Atlanta, until he had batteries issues late in the event. He would end finishing the race 6 laps down, which was extremely disappointing honestly. As Dillon had a great race going, I thought he was going to finish inside the top 5. He's also ran well on this type of track in 2016, so not really surprising. I like him even more at Vegas. Austin Dillon ran his best at places like Vegas, Kansas and Michigan last season. Finished 3 of those 4 races in 6th or better. What does those track in common? They don't see a lot of fall-off. He finished 5th in last season's race. He started 5th, finished 5th and posted 104.4 driver rating. He was a top 7 driver for almost that entire race from what I remember. After last weekend's run, I am very optimistic about his chances at Vegas and rebound from his bad luck last week. Headed into the weekend, I think he is close to a top 10 fantasy option.

4-Kevin Harvick: There were some concerned about Harvick switching from Chevy to Ford in the offseason, but those worries were rested to bed after he qualified on the pole. Not only did he do that, but he went on to dominate the race. Harvick was untouchable throughout Sunday's race. Then he got a pit road penalty, some things never changes for him it seems. He will now turn his attention to Las Vegas. This place has been another good track for him, since joining SHR. In the past four races, he has compiled 3 Top 10 finishes. While leading in the past three races here. In 2015, he was nearly unstoppable and led 142 laps on his way to victory lane. In last season's event, he was pretty good overall. He started 6th, finished 7th and posted 106.6 drive rating. Not bad at all, but not his best race either though. I wouldn't call Vegas his best track by any means, but this is quality track for him. After last week, it is hard to overlook him right now. He is one of the few driver that we can feel good about this early in the season!

5-Kasey Kahne: I wasn't impressed by HMS in general, but I will give some credit to Kasey though. He started deep in the field, moved up to top 15 or top 20 and lost a lap (twice). Eventually was able to finish on the lead lap late and finish inside the top 5 somehow. Not something I really expect out of the No.5 car. As he didn't really sound too positive about his chances on PRN before the race. Still, he has finishes of 4th and 7th to start the 2017 season! That's pretty good for him! How will he do at Vegas? Hard to say, but he should be a top 10 to top 15 fantasy option though. Over his past three races at Vegas, he has compiled 11.7 average finish with 10.3 average running position and 93.2 driver rating. In 3 of his past 4 Vegas races, he has finished inside the top 10. In 5 races with HMS, he has 8.6 average running position and 102.2 driver rating. He had his worst race last season in terms of race performance and he was still solid. In last season's race, he's started 8th, finished 10th, posted a career-low driver rating with the #5 of 86.5 driver rating and 11.0 average running position. Yes, performance-wise this was his worst race with the #5 team. Even though, he was pretty strong still. I really like Kahne, especially since he is coming off solid finishes in the first two races in 2017.

11-Denny Hamlin: The big question I had about Hamlin in my preview last week was how would he start the season? Would he get off to a fast start or a slow start? Well so far it has been a slow start for Hamlin. Much like the past two seasons, but except much worse. He's finished outside of the top 15 at Daytona and finished in the garage at Atlanta. Not good at all. He will try to rebound at Vegas now. Joe Gibbs Racing just weren't themsvles at Atlanta. Kenseth was the only drive to finish on the lead lap. So JGR needs to have a big weekend, for sure. However, the numbers haven't been that good for Hamlin at Vegas recently. In his past 5 races at Vegas, he has finished 12th-20th place. He has only one finish inside the top 10 and that was in 2015. All four of those finishes, he had a driver below 100 as well. So not like he had bad luck. Hamlin just haven't really performed like he should had been. Hard to say what to expect out of him, but I don't much beyond a top 10 finish from him though.

18-Kyle Busch: Atlanta just was terrible for Kyle Busch. He's started 3rd but quickly faded through the field and ended up finishing off the lead lap. That was the worst race I seen out of Kyle Busch since probably like 2014. Yeah it was pretty bad overall. He just wasn't his day honestly. That happens sometimes, didn't help that the 4 car was on an insane pace, either. Busch will try to put that behind him and get back to running up front. Either way, he needs a good run because this hasn't been a good start for him to 2017. Kyle has ran extremely well at Vegas in his past three races though. In his past three Vegas races, he has compiled 6.3 average finish with 6.3 average running position and 110.0 driver rating. In 2 of those 3 races, he's posted two top 4 finishes. I will be very interested in how the 18 team does this weekend.

19-Daniel Suarez: Suarez was just bad at Atlanta and struggled pretty bad, while finishing outside of the top 25. Like I said in the Fantasy Nascar update on Saturday's evening, he is no Carl Edwards and he proved that. Suarez is a young driver, so he will need a lot more seat time before he becomes anything really good. Remember when Austin Dillon entered Cup a few years ago? He started out by running in the 20s. Not everyone can be Elliott, Larson or Blaney right off the bat. Not much to say about him, other than he's should be a mid to low 20 driver at Vegas. Maybe more, since Atlanta is a super difficult track to master as a young driver. And Vegas is more kind overall, as there is very little fall-off at this place.

20-Matt Kenseth: Kenseth lost a lap early in last weekend's race and it took until under 70 laps to go, in order for him to get caught back up. When he did, then the 20 car quickly moved to the front. with about 40 to go, he's restarted 9th and drove up to 5th. He would end up finishing 3rd for the event. Not something I thought we would see out of him. I had a good feeling about him entering last weekend, but didn't expect a top 5 finish after he got multiple penalties. He will try to get another good finish at Vegas. I cannot say that this is his best track though. Still a pretty good one overall. He's a former three-time winner here and won back in 2013 in his first start with JGR. In 4 starts with #20 team, he has compiled 3 top 10 finishes. With finishes of 9th and 10th in 2014 and 2015. On the positive side, he's led in 6 of his past 7 races at Vegas. Hard to say what Kenseth will offer this weekend, but I do like him as a top 10 finisher though. Knowing Kenseth, he will likely find a way to be a top 5 player before it is over though. I don't hate him by any means!

21-Ryan Blaney: Blaney had a tough race at Atlanta, he just wasn't that good in the race. He had to make a couple unscheduled stops that really put him behind. Never more than a few laps, but still it took him out of contention. Even if that didn't happen, I got the feeling he didn't have much for anything more than a top 15 regardless. I wasn't super high on him last week, anyhow. However, I am much more optimistic for him at Vegas. Last season, he was very good here. He's finished 6th and was a legit top 10 contender. In that event, he's started 14th, finished 6th, had 8.0 average running position and 102.2 driver rating. For whatever reason, Blaney seems to perform better on tracks that see limited fall-off. It was a trend that I noticed last season, I am hoping that is the case once again. He is capable of running and finishing inside the top 10 or top 12. If anything goes according to plan for him.

22-Joey Logano: Logano was fast all weekend at Atlanta, but things just didn't line up for him though. He lost a lap and never really got back on the lead lap. Just before end of segment 2, he had  a shot. However, Ricky Stenhouse Jr was lapped with 3 laps to go in that segment. Stenhouse Jr got the lucky dog. Logano settled in around 16th or 17th for reminder of the event. Tough race for him, but he will try to get back on track. Penske cars always seems to run well here. Logano been running well here since joining the 22 team. Especially over his past three races. In his past three races, he has compiled 5.3 average finish with 6.7 average running position and 114.3 driver rating. He's qualified inside the top 2 in all three of those races. While leading 44 or more laps each time. Part of his success has been because of his great starting position. He had his best race in last season's event. He's started 2nd, finished 2nd, led 74 laps (career-high) and posted 130.6 driver rating. That 130.6 driver rating is also a career-high by far. I think the Penske cars will be strong once again this weekend and both be top 5 contenders!

24-Chase Elliott: Elliott was awesome last weekend at Atlanta and he probably would had won, if he didn't have that pit road penalty and that bad restart. He was strong all race long and finished inside the top 5 still. I like him at Vegas, there isn't a lot to go on here though. He was running inside the top 10 here last season before getting involved in a wreck though. Elliott's biggest asset will be his strength on the 1.5 mile tracks this season, I think. So, I see no reason to believe that the 24 won't be good here. I cannot recall a race on this type of track so far in his career, where he hasn't contended for a top 10 finish. Or at least have top 10 speed.

41-Kurt Busch: Kurt Busch won at Daytona and backed that up with a top 10 finish at Atlanta, as well. But I don't know if you will like his numbers this weekend though. His record here is not very promising at all! Over his past 10 races at Vegas, he has only two top 10 finishes. Yes, two top 10 finishes and his best finish is 9th (twice). In his past 9 races, he has finished 20th or worse in 7 of those races. Yes, 7 times he's finished 20th or worse. He did finish 9th in last season's race, after starting on the pole. But for the entire event, I don't know if he had a top 10 car. He had a 93.3 driver rating and 11.0 average running position. Also spent less than 70% of the laps inside the top 15 as well. At best you can expect a top 10 finish out of him, but his record really scare me away honestly. I need to see him practice, before I say anything else about him.

42-Kyle Larson: Kyle Larson really throw away that race at Atlanta. He in my opinion would had won, if he stood on the bottom. However, Larson wanted to take away the top from Keselowski. That was the wrong move though. His car was better on the bottom, I think his chances were better winning down there. This is the third straight races here Larson lost the lead with under 10 laps to go. That's great for him though, as it shows that he is taking the next step towards being a top driver. So far, he hasn't had a lot of success at this place overall. He's finished 8th back in 2015, but also has finishes of 34th and 19th. Last season, he's finished 34th for that event. He ran in the teens mainly for the first couple runs and was moving forward. However, he got a pit road penalty on a pit stop. Which put him outside of the top 20, then he got put in the wall a little while after that. I cannot say that I know what to expect from him this weekend. Atlanta fit his style so last week it was logic to think that he would do well. This weekend not so much. If the 42 car can run well inside the top 5 this weekend, I think the CGR cars are legit. Regardless, Larson is off to his best start of his career.

48-Jimmie Johnson: Johnson had a tough race at Atlanta and should be primed to rebound at Vegas. For some reason, people might back off of Johnson. I love that, if it does happen. We rarely see Johnson have back-to-back bad races, especially early in the season. Vegas is a great track for him and he has proven in the past that he is a great driver here. Johnson's career numbers are amazing here. In 15 career starts, he has compiled 9 Top 6 finishes overall. In his past 5 races, he's finished 6th or better four times. While 5 of his past 7 races here, he has finished 6th or better. He did finish 41st back in 2015. If you just look at the past two seasons' average finish, then there's a good chance you will overlook him. I think a lot of people do that in general. Especially the ''average'' fantasy players out there. And don't be fooled by his poor finish last week, as he was running inside the top 10, before the speeding penalties occurred. I really do like Johnson this weekend!

77-Erik Jones: I was very high on Erik Jones heading into the season and now do you understand why? He was just awesome at Atlanta and showed us all why he is the next big thing in Nascar! He has a ways to go still as driver, before contending for race wins. But he was a legit top 10 driver this past weekend. I think he can keep it up at Atlanta. Personally, I believe that he will be able to run better at Vegas than Atlanta. I have high hopes for the 77 car this weekend once again, much like I had in last week's preview!

78-Martin Truex Jr: Martin Truex Jr didn't exactly set the world on fire at Atlanta, but he was in contention for a top 10 finish all day long and finish 8th. The 78 team did a good job of keeping up with adjustments and did what they needed to. How will he do at Vegas? Hard to say honestly. The Toyotas seemed to be behind overall in the first real test of the season. But Truex Jr was the bright spot overall though. He has good numbers at Vegas. In his past three Vegas races, he has compiled 9.0 average finish with 8.3 average running position and 100.9 driver rating. He wasn't that great at Vegas last season. He's started 10th , finished 11th and posted 88.9 driver rating. Not great, but I think he will be better this time around though. I find it hard that the 78 car won't be a top 10 performer.

88-Dale Jr: Dale Jr is coming off a pitiful start to the season so far. Not a great way to start, but he can rebound. And Vegas would be a great place for him to do, too. In his past three races at Vegas, he has compiled 4.7 average finish with 6.3 average running position and 111.9 driver rating. He's ranked 2nd in terms of average finish in the past three seasons to only Brad Keselowski! Currently, Dale Jr has knocked off 6 straight top 10 finishes at Vegas. Including 4 straight top 8 finishes in his past 4 races. He's finished 8th in last season's race. I don't really love Dale Jr, after seeing him last week. But we have very limited data to go on, we cannot based everything on last week. This week could be a complete 360. Different type of 1.5 mile tracks, too. I think the 88 will be fine and possibly challenge for a top 10 finish. We will see, I would like to see some speed out of him in practice though.

2017 Fantasy Nascar RaceDay Thoughts (Atlanta)

Welcome to TimersSports

RaceDay Thoughts -

Jeff Nathans (@JeffNathans18):

- Kevin Harvick and the Fords look strong this weekend. 4 of them qualified inside the top 5. Harvick, Logano and Keselowski all look to be potential top 5 drivers heading into today's race

- The HMS haven't really made much noise this weekend (outside of Elliott), but I think they will be just fine for today's race though. I think the 48 will be a player before it is all over. 5 and 88 will be close to top 10 guys.

-Ryan Newman looks awful good on Friday and Saturday. I haven't seen this kind of speed in quite awhile

-Lap times fall off quickly at this place, so don't be shocked to see a lot of comers and goers. In the end, I do expect the best drivers to be at the front regardless

Garry Briggs (@Garryy12):

- Ricky Stenhouse Jr looks good this weekend. He's qualified 4th and had 4th-best ten lap average in final practice. At end of final practice, he added that ''I think she is pretty sporty''

- AJ Dinger should be a fine sleeper this weekend. He ran extremely well on the 1.5 mile tracks in 2016 and been good this weekend.

- Michael McDowell is another good sleeper to consider. He is starting 36th but should be able to move to around 25th or maybe more.

-I like the CGR cars more than I did before the weekend started

2017 Fantasy Nascar Updated Sleepers & Dark Horses (Atlanta)

Welcome to TimersSports

Well, we saw practice and qualifying already for Atlanta! Now all to do is set our lineups and watch the race. I love Atlanta, because you can pass here. There's 500 miles of racing, so there will be a lot of different faces at the front. I do believe the best drivers will be near front of the field. I think it takes a certain level of skill to run well here. So logically guys like Harvick, Keselowski, Busch, Logano, Johnson, Larson etc are guys that comes first to mind. You usually slid all over the place at this track and it is hard to find grip, especially after the tires really fall off.

If you are like me, I like to take some gambles. Super risky gamble that will hurt my lineup potential? No, but I do think there are some sleepers and dark horses laying out there. They may be more hidden under the surface than the obvious choices. So let's get started!

Sleepers -

Ricky Stenhouse Jr - I said Stenhouse Jr was my personal favorite sleeper this weekend and nothing has changed. He's qualified 4th and looked very good on Saturday. He was only 13th on the speed charts, but he was ranked 4th in best-ten lap average. Halfway through the session, RFR's twitter account tweeted out that he was ranked 12th in green flag speed average. And at end of final practice, Stenhouse said that his car was pretty sporty! What do I make of all of that? Well, I would say that Stenhouse Jr is a pretty good fantasy option overall. He has speed this weekend, much like he did last season. He's finished 10th and posted 10.0 ARP in 2016 event at Atlanta. I think he is better this weekend than last season. Remember, Stenhouse was a consistent top 15 threat on this type of track in 2016. I think he's capable of being a top 10 or top 12 finisher!

Ryan Newman - I probably should list Newman as a dark horse as he is a pretty successful and established driver in this series. So it is kinda of disrespectful to list him as a sleeper. At the same time, he hasn't really done much in number of years now. His last win came in 2013 and we are now closing in on 4 years without a win for him. But this might be his weekend though. He's qualified 2nd and has a rocketship since unloading. He's topped the first practice session on Friday and was 6th on Saturday's afternoon. In final practice (on Saturday), he was ranked first in best-ten lap average. To back up his speed, many people has been talking about him as a threat to win. Not something we had ever heard since him joining RCR.

AJ Dinger - There's a couple other good sleepers such as Ty Dillon, Jamie Mac and Austin Dillon, but I feel like Dinger is the one driver that is getting the most overlooked. The fact that he is being overlooked is great. Because I love him for the race. He's finished 3 of the final 4 races on the 1.5 mile tracks inside the top 10! Two seasons ago, he's finished inside the top 10. Since the 2010 season, he has 4 Top 14 finishes. That's over 50% of the time, for the record. Since joining the #47 team, he's been boom or bust really. Finishes of 7th and 14th (in 2013 and 2015). While finishing 40th and 27th in 2014 and 2016. In fact, Dinger has finished inside the top 14 in 2015, 2013 and 2011. Why is that important? Those are all odd years. 2017 is a odd year, too. History says he is due for a top 14 finish. Also, he's been good this weekend overall. Qualified 20th, but was 4th in final practice. He's low on the ten-lap average chart, but I am okay with that. Dinger should be able to move up at least a few spots and challenge for a top 15 or top 17 finish.

Dark Horses -

Chase Elliott - A lot of people consider Elliott as a favorite, but I do not. Elliott is definitely a dark horse though. Not trying to slander Elliott here, but he haven't won a cup race yet. So it is hard for me to consider him as a favorite. He's defintely fits under the dark horse catgoery. A driver's whose has great potential to run up front but not expected to necessarily win. Elliott will start from 11th and has a fast car for the race. He was 2nd on the 20-lap average chart and 9th on the ten-lap average chart. Usually both of those are great signs for a driver. However, Atlanta is a tough place to figure out. Also it is hard on tires and the lap times really fall off here. With that said, tire management is very key here. I think Elliott is one of the best drivers at doing that. He can save his stuff, while still being fast. Something not a lot of young drivers can do.

Kyle Larson - A driver that I had some questions about heading into the weekend was Kyle Larson. But I like him a lot after watching Saturday's practice. Larson qualified 8th and seems to have a pretty good car overall. On the best-ten lap average chart, he's ranked 11th in average speed. It is impressive since he made his run nearly on lap 30. While basically the first ten drivers did on it in the first ten laps. To put it comparison, Keselowski was the only driver among the top ten to post his ten lap average after lap 1-10. Larson was 2nd driver to do that. Yes, I know just ten lap is a small simple size, I agree. However, Larson's spotter thought his driver looked pretty good in practice too. On top of that, his teammate was ranked first on the 20-lap average chart. Then take into consideration that Atlanta takes skill behind the wheel to exceed. It is in the driver's hands. And Kyle Larson is one of the first drivers we think of when it comes to driving talent.  I love all of that! Kyle Larson should be a top 10 player today, if not more!

Alright that's all I got! Good luck!

2017 Fantasy Nascar Picks (Atlanta)

Welcome to TimersSports

Alright Daytona wasn't very kind most of us. That's always a bummer no doubt, I hate starting the season off on the wrong foot. With that said, we have a chance to rebound at Atlanta. I love this place! I grew up in Atlanta, I consider it my home racetrack. I lived in the area and attended every race from 2006 to 2014. I miss going every year and would kill to go back! This is a fun 1.5 worn out racetrack. You can pass at this track which makes it fun for us fantasy nascar folks. As you aren't forced to start drivers on track position. However, they plan to redo the surface after the completion of this race on Sunday. So this will be the final race on this surface. Like all good things, it must eventually come to an end. Anyhow, let's get to today's picks!

Yahoo -

A:

Start - Joey Logano (9)

Bench - Jimmie Johnson (9)

Reasons - My big mistake this week, I didn't really do enough thinking when setting my lineup. Yeah, it sucks. I should had went with Harvick or Keselowski to be paired with Johnson or Logano. I didn't so oh well then. I still really like the Logano pick. He's fast, along with his teammate Keselowski. So I am going with Logano over Johnson. I would like to go with Johnson, but I am playing it safe overall.

B:

Start - Chase Elliott (9), Ryan Newman (9)

Bench - Ryan Blaney (9) and Kasey Kahne (9)

Reasons - Pretty easy choices overall. Elliott and Newman looks like the best two choices this weekend in this grouping tier. I love Elliott, he was very fast in final practice. Solid long run speed, too. Newman looks top 10 all weekend and we don't usually see that out of him in practice. Hopefully that is a good sign. Beyond that, I like the 17 and 47 as legit sleepers.

C:

Start - Ty Dillon (9)

Bench - Erik Jones (9)

Reasons - I am going with Ty Dillon over Erik Jones because well expereince. I know what to expect out of Jones. I will save Jones for Vegas and beyond. I want to see what Jones has to offer during the race in the #77 car.

Fantasy Live - 48,4,5,95 and 13

Reasons - I am a big believer in Kevin Harvick and think he will lead a lot of laps on Sunday! I am expecting 100+ laps led. So I will bulid my team around him. So now, I need a driver that will contend for the win that starting mid-pack. How about Jimmie Johnson? Starting 18th and should move up 13 spots. I like that! My 3rd driver could be a driver that starts up front, but that would mean I would have to roll with a field-filler. Instead, I am going with Kasey Kahne. He is starting 29th and should move up about 14 to 16 spots. I will take that for $22.00. Then I will round out my team with McDowell and Dillon.  McDowell starts 36th and shown speed this weekend. I like that! Dillon is just a value play for a value price. If I had to make a change it would be having a 3rd driver that would contend for the win. I cannot without rebuilding my lineup.

Sleeper - Ricky Stenhouse Jr

Reasons - Ricky Stenhouse Jr has looked good this weekend. Qualified 4th and ran well here last year. He finished 10th and had a top 10 car for that event. This weekend, he has looked pretty good. At end of final practice, he said that she is pretty sporty.

Winner - Kevin Harvick

2017 Fantasy Nascar Update (Atlanta)

Welcome to TimersSports

Fantasy Nascar Update -

A:

1. Kevin Harvick - Harvick been very good this weekend, despite SHR switching over to Fords during the offseason. He will start from the pole and has looked good on the long runs this weekend, too. That has been a trait of the #4 and Kevin Harvick at SHR! This weekend will be no difference, either. Also, Harvick has dominated at this track over the past couple seasons. His numbers are far better than every other driver. There isn't a driver that is even close to him right now. As for this weekend, I thought he looked like one of the best cars on the long run for Saturday's lone practice session. I really do like him to go to victory lane for Sunday's race. He's my pick to win!

My Overall Ranking: 1st

2. Brad Keselowski - I love Brad Keselowski this weekend at Atlanta! He's unloaded very fast and been very happy with his car overall so far. He showed good speed on Friday and qualified in 5th. He came back on Saturday and backed up that speed once again. He was great with the low-downforce package in 2016. He's impressive behind the wheel of a racecar, so no shock that he excels at Atlanta. Remember this is a driver's track. He is one of the drivers you expect to run well here. He has a great car for Sunday's race!

My Overall Ranking: 2nd

3. Joey Logano - Both of the Penske Fords has looked pretty good this weekend at Atlanta! Much like teammate Keselowski, I thought Joey looked very good on Saturday and throughout the weekend. He showed very good long run speed in Saturday's practice session. He was ranked 3rd in terms of 20-best lap average for that session. Only JMac and Chase Elliott had a better average than Logano. The 22 car been awesome here ever since Logano came to Penske in 2013. Since 2013, he's ranked inside the top 2 in every major category. Including average finish, average running position, driver rating, laps led, etc. Simply put, Logano is a great performer here at Atlanta. And remember, Joey been one of the best drivers on this type of tracks over the past three seasons. He is fast this weekend and could have something for the race win before it is over!

My Overall Ranking: 3rd

4. Kyle Busch - Rowdy will roll off from the 3rd position and should be in contention for most of the afternoon on Sunday. Kyle loves this place and he is racing in all three races this weekend. With only two practice sessions this weekend, that is not a bad thing for him. He will have more time on the track than anyone else. Sure different cars and stuff, but you can learn things though. I think he will be fine on Sunday. I don't think know if he will be as good as Harvick, but this is a Rowdy track though. At Atalnta, it is a driver's track. Talent wheelman are the ones that usually do the best here. To no surprise that the 18 car been up front often over the past couple seasons here. Rowdy posted the 15th-best ten lap average in final practice. Should be noted that, he posted that from laps 16-25. Lap times fall off huge here, so it explains why he down on the speed charts. He was 9th in terms of 20-best lap averages. There were only about 10 drivers to be included in this chart, but still need a decent ride to go 20 straight laps in race-trim. Usually if you can post a long 20+ lap run in practice it means you are in the ballpark. Not always, but it is a encouraging sign though. Headed into Sunday's race, I view him as a top 5 fantasy option overall.

My Overall Ranking: 4th

5. Jimmie Johnson - This final spot was down to Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson. I went with Johnson because well he's Jimmie Johnson! The guy that has won the past two seasons. This guy owns this place. He's down on the speed charts this weekend so far, but I am not concerned at all! Johnson will be able to move forward and Chad Knaus will get that car right for him eventually. Will it be the first or second stage? Maybe not. But didn't even isn't the first time the 48 car started mid-pack here. The past two seasons, he has started further back than this (18th). I think Johnson will be just fine and at least be a top 10 contender. If not much more!

My Overall Ranking: 6th

B:

1. Chase Elliott - Elliott has been very fast this weekend and I cannot say that I am shocked at all. I (and many other people) been high on him since he's joined the Cup level. As for this weekend, many experts (including myself) has pinned this as Elliott's win. It would be fitting since this is his hometrack. The 24 car qualified 11th and then posted the best-single lap on Saturday afternoon. He also had the 2nd-best 20-lap average in that same practice session. And Elliott was 9th in terms of best-ten lap average. Tire management is key here and very few can take care of his tires like Elliott can, either. All-around, the 24 car looked good on Saturday. I cannot find anything that say he won't be at least a top 10 driver for the race.

My Overall Ranking: 5th

2. Ryan Newman - Ryan Newman been awesome this weekend! He topped practice on Friday and then looked like one of the strongest cars in qualifying. In fact, he qualified 2nd for Sunday's race. On Saturday, he looked very good once again. He was 6th in terms of fastest-single lap and topped all drivers in terms of ten-lap averages. Now, that usually not Ryan Newman. Newman usually looks average in practice before being consistent in the low-teens during the race. That been the trend since joining RCR. But this weekend, that is not the vibe that I am getting so far. I get the feeling he has a top 10 car and maybe some more. During final practice on Saturday, he described his car as ''speedy''. And it certainly looks pretty speedy, too!

My Overall Ranking: 7th

3. Kurt Busch - Busch is coming off his win at Daytona and usually pretty damn good at Atlanta! From a pure career point of view as a whole, you have to be impressed by what he has accomplished here. In just his past 9 races, he has compiled 6 Top 6 finishes. Including 5 Top 5 finishes with going to victory lane twice. While 10 of the past 13 Atlanta has ended in 11th or better for him. Yeah he's good! So he checks off the momentum and track history's categories. Next thing to look at? How much speed he has shown this weekend? Well he been pretty good! Kurt qualfied inside the top 10 and posted the 3rd-quickest lap in Saturday's practice session. He was ranked 20th in terms of best-ten lap average, but was ranked 5th in terms of 20-best ten lap average. It should be noted that on the best-ten lap average, the first 13 of 16 cars did it in the first 10 laps. Kurt didn't post his ten lap average until laps 26-35. It makes a huge difference here at Atlanta! Even a few laps is huge in tire fall-off, trust me it matters plenty. I think Kurt will be a top 10 guy on Sunday, but not sure beyond that though. We will see though.

My Overall Ranking: 8th

4. Kyle Larson - Kyle Larson could be an interesting fantasy play for Sunday's race. He been good this weekend overall. Not a driver many has talked about, but that 42 car got some speed in it. Both of the Ganassi cars actually look pretty good. Spotter for Kyle Larson said he thought they were pretty good (meaning the 42 car). I will take a word of a spotter, doesn't hurt that his lap times were decent. He's ranked 11th in terms of 10-lap average in Saturday's practice. Why is that important? 9 of the first 10 drivers posted their consecutive laps in the first ten laps of the practice session. Larson's best-ten lap average came on laps 28-39. Only four drivers posted their best-ten lap average later than Larson in that session. There is always some concerns with Larson. As he is that boom or bust play typically. Also his track record is worrisome over the past couple seasons. He does have the speed to be a top 10 guy.

My Overall Ranking: 10th

5. JMac - The 1 car has looked fast this weekend overall. He was quick in the opening practice on Friday and looked strong in qualifying too. He will start from the 4th row with teammate Kyle Larson. On Saturday, he looked good once again. He was 3rd in terms of best-ten lap averages and had the best-20 lap average for the session overall. Last year, his big issue was that he fell off way too much. Both of the CGR cars were like that. I think they will both be alright. I wouldn't be shocked if they both finished inside the top 10 on Sunday. But then again Atlanta is tough place to judge. Based on what we know, I would say that 1 car is a good gamble to roll with!

My Overall Ranking: 12th

C:

1. Ty Dillon - Ty Dillon has looked good this weekend overall. This isn't the first race here for him, either. He ran here last year and finished inside the top 20. This season he is in a better ride to a certain extent. Dillon has shown speed since unloading. He didn't qualify as good as I would had liked but I think he will be fine though. Dillon showed me enough in practice that he is the best option in this grouping of drivers. Dillon should be a top 25 driver with enough upside to snag a top 20 finish, in my opinion.

My Overall Ranking: 21st

2. Erik Jones - I had very high hopes for Erik Jones for the season and thought he would excel on the 1.5 mile tracks. So logically, I figured he would come out looking strong. So far this weekend, he been just a top 20 driver overall. In terms of speed and potential, he has huge upside. For me, it is hard to overlook that fact that he drives for FRR (basically an extra JGR team). Jones should have upside to reach the top 15, but hard to say if he reach that. I would pin him of a top 25 driver with top 20 upside. Simply because I haven't seen enough out of him yet.

My Overall Ranking: 22nd

3. Daniel Suarez - Suarez was expected to struggled since has zero cup experience. For him, I think most of us figured this would be a learning race for him. I think that will still be the case. He wasn't terrible in practice, but he is no Carl Edwards. I think much like fellow rookies Dillon and Jones, I think he is nothing beyond a top 25 to top 20 driver. That is all you can really expect from him honestly. Of course, that is the standard you can expect out of them. There is always the chance they exceed expectations. We will see, but I view Suarez as the weak link though.

My Overall Ranking: 24th

2017 Fantasy Nascar Sleepers & Dark Horses (Atlanta)

Welcome to TimersSports

It was great to get Daytona out of the way, that race is always a crapshoot it seems. Luckily for me, I selected my lineups like a crapshoot. Believe it or not, it actually paid off. Who would had imagine a team of Truex Jr, Almirola, Dinger and Whitt on Yahoo Fantasy Racing would net me 332 points? Only plate racing will do that! Now onto Atlanta, the first real test for these teams! I love Atlanta, I love how it is worn out and you can really pass here. Especially on the long run, you can make passes here as the lap times really fall off. As fantasy players, we love lap times that fall-off. Especially if you selected your team on drivers that has long run cars. With that said, it will be tough to know what anyone got before practice. We have no practice data nor any seasonal data that gives us a true clue. When cars hit the track on Friday's afternoon, it will be the first real taste of what the teams have.

Here is today's post!

Sleepers -

Austin Dillon - I listed Dillon as a dark horse last week because of his record and hype at the plate tracks. This week, I downgraded him to a sleeper. Why? While, he doesn't have the same potential like last week. Also, he has a questionable track record here. I think his track record at this place will definitely drag his attractiveness down this week.He did run very well in last season's race. He finished 11th and had 13.0 average running position. That APR is important because it says that he was a solid performer in that event. Also had 82.2 driver rating and completed 99% of the laps inside the top 15. He's also ran very well on the 1.5 mile tracks in 2016 as well. He showed us all that he is a legit intermediate performer in 2016. I think the #3 team will be at their best on this type of track once again. Am I super high on him and think he will contend for the win? Nope, but he is certainly worth a look for a high single digit/low teen finisher though.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr - There's a lot of good drivers to consider for this weekend, but my personal favorite sleeper is Ricky Stenhouse Jr! Every time we came to the 1.5 mile tracks in 2016, I gave Ricky strong consideration. He ran top 15 consistently last year (especially early in the year) on the cookie cutters. Will that translate to 2017? Who knows, but I am willing to take a shot with him. His numbers at Atlanta are pretty decent overall. In 5 career starts, he's finished inside the top 20 three times. Including in last season's race. He's finished 10th in last season's race and held 89.9 driver rating with 10.0 average running position. In fact, he was one of 4 drivers to post a perfect 100% of the laps completed inside the top 15. That's difficult to do and that would back his solid DR and ARP. Like I said those numbers won't automatically translate, but why not take a shot with him? I see no reason not to. I am very optimistic about his chances. A lot of people will overlook and that makes me loves him even more.

Aric Almirola - This last one was a tough one for sleepers. So I went with the driver that I thought most people would overlook. Aric Almirola is the one I choose. Aric is usually someone I like on the shorter tracks and plate tracks. However, I will give him some love because of his good track record here. Currently, Aric has put together 4 straight Top 20 finishes. While finishing 11th, 15th and 9th in just his last three races. He's struggled in last season race, but still posted an 11th place finish. He had 18.0 average running position in that race, so he was still decent. But you know, not nearly as good as his final finish position shows. With that said, this is a good track for him. Sometimes, a track makes the driver. I think that is the case for Aric. There is a lot of questions surrounding him, so it would be a good idea to watch practice.

Dark Horse Pick -

Chase Elliott - Elliott would be a great fantasy option to consider as a dark horse pick. He was great last season here. He had 10.0 average running position in that race, in just his 7th career Cup race. That's impressive! What is more is that he started 24th in that event and had 7th-best average running position overall. Also, this is his home racetrack. So I am willing to bet that Elliott will be will swinging for the fences to get his first Cup win. He was great here last season and we are using the same tire combinations as 2016 at Atlanta. I really do like Elliott this weekend, but I want to see practice first. Let me see practice and then I will make a call on him. But honestly, I expect the HMS cars to come out hot.
