Fantasy Nascar Preview (Charlotte)

Welcome to TimersSports

After an insane tire blowing Kansas race , we are heading to Charlotte. What I love about Charlotte is the schedule. Qualifying is on Thursday , instead of Friday. Only one practice session on the day of qualifying. Typically all the practice sessions on the same day when race held Saturday night. Charlotte is very similar to Kansas , so overlooking last week data wouldn't be wise. Will championship hopeful dig themselves out of a hole? Will underdogs steal the spotlight at Charlotte? Let get rolling!

1-Jamie Mac: JMac was very strong at Kansas and then history had to repeat itself with 6 laps to go. Charlotte been a very good track for JMac. Over the past 5 races here , JMac have compiled 16.2 average finish , 1 Top 5 , 1 Top 10 , 4 Top 10s , 36 laps led and 81.0 driver rating. He finished 5th back in May. Also he won the All star race in May. Over the previous 5 races in 2014 , JMac have a 12.8 average finish (8th-best).

2-Brad Keselowski: Keselowski blew a tire at Kansas and now he will have to fight out of a corner. Well that shouldn't be a problem. Penske cars have won 4 of the past 5 races dating back to Richmond. BK won this race a year ago. Over the past 5 races here , BK have compiled 12.6 average finish , 2 Top 5s , 3 Top 10s , 4 Top 10s , 197 laps led , 1 DNF and 98.6 driver rating. Over the past 5 races in 2014 , BK have compiled 9.4 average finish (4th-best) and 2 wins.

3-Austin Dillon: Seems like Austin Dillon keeps getting better and better. He will never be Kyle Larson , but this young man knows how to get good finishes. He scored his 4th top 10 of the season at Kansas. Expect least a top 20 from Dillon.

4-Kevin Harvick: Harvick was really good last time at Charlotte , but came home 2nd. Last week at Kansas , KH had a flat tire last in the race which cost him a top 5. Over the past 5 races here , KH have compiled 6.6 average finish , 1 win , 2 Top 5s , 4 Top 10s , 5 Top 20s , 129 laps led , and 105.1 driver rating. Harvick have third  best average finish over the past 5 races in 2014 with 7.6.

5-Kasey Kahne: Kahne best racetrack is Charlotte ,so if you cannot win your league championship. Then try to gain many spots as possible. Kahne definitely help that could happen. Over the past 5 races here , KK have compiled 5.4 average finish , 1 win , 3 Top 5s , 4 Top 10s , 5 Top 20s, 395 laps led, and 120.9 driver rating. Over the past 5 races in 2014 , Kahne have scored 0 Top 20s (last top 20s was his win at Atlanta.)

10-Danica Patrick: Patrick qualified inside the top 5 in May , but went south during the race. Faded to about 25th before her engine went up in smoke. Danica always brings top 20 upside. This weekend should be no different.

11-Denny Hamlin: The Gibbs cars are on a roll lately. Who would thought since they all stumbled down towards end of the regular season. Hamlin finished 7th at Kansas. Now heads to Charlotte. Hamlin last time finished 22nd after getting spun late in the race. Over the past 5 races here , DH have compiled 7.8 average finish ,3 Top 5s , 4 Top 10s , 4 Top 20s , 55 laps led and 105.6 driver rating.

16-Greg Biffle: Well I been a bit tough on RFR. None of the Roush cars been very competitive, but they find ways to stay relevant in fantasy nascar. The Biff finished 15th at Kansas. Despite being involved in two separate wrecks. Over the past 5 races here , Biff have compiled 15.2 average finish , 2 Top 5s , 2 Top 10s, 3 Top 20s , 225 laps led and 91.7 driver rating.

18-Kyle Busch: Choking? What choking? Kyle Busch have 4 Top 10s in 4 chase races. KB is having his best chase ever and is coming off a third at Kansas. If he can finish 3rd at Kansas , then he can win at Charlotte in his sleep. Over the past 5 races here , KB have compiled 12.0 average finish , 3 Top 5s , 4 Top 10s , 4 Top 20s , 124 laps led and 105.2 driver rating. In  Over the past 5 races in 2014 , KB have the 6th best average finish with 8.4. During the chase , Kyle have an 7.0 average finish (2nd best among  chase drivers.)

20-Matt Kenseth: Matt Kenseth haven't won a race all season , but consistency been his call card for years now. Charlotte was a great track for MK earlier this season. As Kenseth was very competitive and finished inside the top 5. Over the past 5 races here , MK have compiled 9.0 average finish , 2 Top 5s , 4 Top 10s , 5 Top 20s , 146 laps led and 102.6 driver rating. MK ranked 7th in chase with 12.2 average finish among chasers.

22-Joey Logano: JoLo have won two of the three races. The Penske cars are just on it on the Intermediate racetracks. Over the past 5 races here ,JoLo have compiled 13.4 average finish , 1 Top 5 , 2 Top 10s , 4 Top 20s , 0 laps led and 81.5 driver rating. Charlotte is one of Joey's best tracks. So far in the chase , Joey leads all drivers with an 2.5 average finish.

24-Jeff Gordon: Gordon and team 24 team struggled at Kansas. Don't expect that to continue though. Charlotte a very good track for Gordon. Believe it or not , Gordon struggled at Charlotte for a few years. Before regaining his stride at CMS last season. He had the car to beat early on in May. But finished 7th. Over the past 5 races here , JG have compiled 14.8 average finish , 3 Top 10s , 4 Top 10s , 41 laps led and 97.8 driver rating.

27-Paul Menard: Menard scored a top 10 at Kansas. Boy does this guy know how to play dead in practice doesn't he? But he have done that all season long. Menard have put together a nice run during the chase. Including a 15.2 average finish. Only one finish outside of 16th. The real positive is here improved his finishing position in every race during the chase (excluding Dover 16th.)

31-Ryan Newman: Newman have back to back top 10s after an 6th place run at Kansas. Charlotte have been a good track for Newman. Over the past 5 races here , RN have compiled 12.6 average finish , 2 Top 10s , 5 Top 20s , 3 laps led and 83.2 laps led. So far in the chase , Newman have a 11.8 average finish (6th-best among chasers.)

42-Kyle Larson: This kid is something special. He is gonna win and he is gonna win very soon. Last guy this good as a rookie was Denny Hamlin or Kyle Busch. Larson is almost a lock to finish inside the top 10 this week.

48-Jimmie Johnson: Johnson the 6 time champ needs a win in the worst way or his outlook for a championship could be iffy. Johnson dominated earlier this season. Over the past 5 races here , JJ have compiled 8.2 average finish , 1 win , 3 Top 5s , 3 Top 10s , 4 Top 20s , 347 laps led and 117.5 driver rating.

88-Dale Jr: Dale Jr was very strong at Kansas. Well until he slam the wall while leading. Dale need a win or two strong races to advance to Round 3. Charlotte been a trouble spot for Dale lately. Over the past 4 races here , Dale Jr have compiled 19.75 average finish, 0 Top 5s , 1 Top 10s , 3Top 20 , 32 laps led and 92.3 driver rating.

99-Carl Edwards: Just when I write them off ,they come to live. RFR sure know how to play mind games. With that being said , I do believe there are choices this week. Will Edwards be a good choice? Yeah probably. Least a top 15. Over the past 5 races here , Edwards have compiled 8.2 average finish , 1 Top 5 , 4 Top 10s , 5 Top 20s , 12 laps led and 93.8 driver rating.

Fantasy Nascar Update (Kansas)

Welcome to Timerssports

Notes -

1-Jamie Mac: JMac made me look bad last week with a frustrating finish. This week he has a fast car. He was strong on the long run in both practices on Saturday. Don't be shocked to see him finish top 10 on Sunday.

2-Brad Keselowski: Not exactly what I was expecting. Brad K should be considered a top 5 option , but didn't have the car to beat. Posted good lap times throughout a run. Brad will be a contender on Sunday.

3-Austin Dillon: AD like normal doesn't show his entire hand until raceday. Dillon showed promised in practice , so expect a finish from 17th - 24th. Dillon is most useful in limited useage leagues.

4-Kevin Harvick: Harvick was easily the car to beat. There wasn't a time this weekend he wasn't fast. Posted the fastest lap on Saturday opening practice. Followed that up with the second fastest lap in final practice. Also Harvick had the best ten lap average. What more impressive is most guys best ten lap average were posted within the first 10 laps on track. Harvick best ten lap average started on lap 16. That speaks volumes folks.

5-Kasey Kahne: Kahne was my sleeper pick earlier this week. And he haven't disappointed. Kahne qualified very well and have put down some very fast laps down on Saturday. Most noticeably posted the 3rd fastest single lap in final practice. So he definitely have top 10 potential , but can he deliver the finish?

10-Danica Patrick: Danica looked lost this weekend. Posted lap times outside the top 20 mostly. Doesn't looked anything close to earlier this season. There are better options to consider.

11-Denny Hamlin: Hamlin wasn't that good actually. Never really showed any kind of speed this weekend either until final practice. It even worse when you start deep in the field. He posted a strong 4th best ten lap average in final practice. In my opinion at best , DH an top 15 option.

14-Tony Stewart: Smoke looked good this weekend , but doesn't look to be top 10 based off practice. He should be a good option for leagues such as Yahoo. But is a bad value play in other leagues such as Fantasy Live which rewards for improving starting positions.

16-Greg Biffle: I am not buying what Biffle is selling. Qualified just outside the top 10. Based off practice , he was around 15th - 20th overall. Only post short runs in practice. So it hard to say how good his car is. Really just complicate his situation.

18-Kyle Busch: Let me be clear , he should be avoided in fantasy nascar without question. But he is a sneaky dark horse for Sunday race. KB will roll off from 7th and have shown speed all Weekend. Really the best Gibbs car in practice. He may need a little more speed to be a true contender on Sunday.

20-Matt Kenseth: Kenseth looked lost all weekend. Unless there some dramatic changes , MK could have a very long Sunday. He will start 27th and have shown very little speed in both practices on Saturday. I would probably try to avoid him if possible.

22-Joey Logano: JoLo been fast all weekend and have a top 5 car based off practice. Joey will roll off from 4th and posted the 4th best ten lap average. He doesn't have the car to beat , but he should make a fantastic option.

24-Jeff Gordon: Gordon to nobody surprise have a bad fast car on the long run. Gordon will start 5th and have posted some blistering fast laps on Saturday. Gordon had the 2nd best car at end of final practice. I don't see him winning back to back , unless something happens to Harvick's car.

27-Paul Menard: Menard not my first choice by any means , but I think he have potential to finish just inside the top 20. Anything else is a bonus. Menard may be worth taking a flier on , but it very unlikely he can muster anything better then 15th. I have him crossing the line at 19th. I am being kind compared to other experts rankings though.

31-Ryan Newman: Newman was very strong on Saturday. He posted some stout laps in both sessions. Ended final practice with the 4th fastest single lap. Also posted the 6th best ten lap average. Really showed great long run speed. I really like Newman for Sunday race.

42-Kyle Larson: Larson been good all weekend. Put down the fastest lap in final practice and had the 3rd best ten lap average. I wouldn't rule out a win for Larson on Sunday. This kid can race. Start him and enjoy the points.

48-Jimmie Johnson: Johnson have struggled all weekend. Started off with a bad qualifying effort. On Saturday , never looked quite right. Posted the 21st fastest lap in final practice. 17th in the earlier session. Also Johnson didn't post any long runs. Which makes it tougher to know what he actually has.

88-Dale Jr: Dale without question is a top 10 car , just a hair off from the top 5. Watch out for the 88 on Sunday. His long run speed was awesome. Ranked 2nd on the best ten lap average speed charts.

99-Carl Edwards: Edwards posted a lot of short runs on Saturday. So we know , Edwards have a good car for a few laps. But the big question is beyond those first few laps. Based on that unknown , i think there safer choices out there.

Fantasy Nascar Raceday Thoughts

Welcome to TimersSports

Happy Raceday. Setting your fantasy team can be difficult , especially with everything being factored in. Below our group of experts give their thoughts on today race (Including their final picks).

Michelle Rizzo (@MichelleRizzo5):

- Harvick will dominates and still lose the race. We almost come to expect this now.

- Aric Almirola will surprise a lot of people. Just watch.

- Least 1 JGR car will dig themselves in a hole to start off the chase second round.

- Track position will be huge. Especially with passing being so tough.

Garry Briggs (@Gbriggs12) :

- Kyle Busch will finish respectively in the top 10.

- Watch out for Kyle Larson and Jamie Mac. Both are great dark horses to win.

- Expect track position to be the deciding factor.

- Practice was much cooler then the actual race temps. So practice may not be very useful. But we cannot afford to ignore it either though.

Matt Aleza (@MattAleza):

- The race winner will come from the top 10 starters.

- I expect a lot of cautions. So starting deep in the field may not be quite as bad as usual.

- Harvick is the man to beat and it isn't very close.

- Least two chase contenders have issues

Yahoo Lineup:

Michelle - Harvick , Newman , Hamlin and Alliager

Garry - Gordon  , Newman , Menard and Larson. * Side Note - No Penske starts available

Matt - Harvick , Logano , JMac and Danica

Race Winner -

Michelle - Gordon

Garry - Larson

Matt - Harvick

Fantasy Nascar Picks

Welcome to Timerssports

Last week recap: Well folks , Dover was pretty uneventful overall. Yahoo (296 pts) and fantasy live (345 points) were overall solid. Austin Dillon disappointed in Yahoo , while Reed Sorenson struggled to produce points in the fantasy live lineup. But no dnfs.

Look ahead to Kansas: Kansas have been a hit or miss for me in recent years. The key to strong lineup here is to stack up on drivers from Hendrick , Penske and SHR (Harvick). It really important to have drivers from those teams , or chances are you may have a very long weekend.

Overall Season Rankings -

Yahoo: 966th (99th Percentile)

Fantasy Live: 172nd (99th Percentile)

Yahoo -

A:

Start: Kevin Harvick (2)

Bench: Jeff Gordon (2)

Reason: Plan is to use Harvick this weekend and then try to save him until Phoenix. Harvick just too good to bench.

B:

Start: Joey Logano (4) , Jamie Mac (6)

Bench: Brad Keselowski (3) , Ryan Newman (1)

Reason: The plan from here until Phoenix is to start one Penske driver (excluding Talladega). Which should set up nicely to use the last 2 penske at Homestead. Of couse it easier said then done. Logano looked better then Keselowski. JMac looked good enough for start save. Want to save my last Newman for Charlotte.

C:

Start: Danica Patrick (3)

Bench: Kyle Larson (2)

Reason: Gonna bite the bullet and hope it pays off in the long run. It would help if Danica can knock off a top 20. We shall see.

Fantasy Live - Harvick , Logano , Keselowski , Sorenson and Mears

Dark Horse - Kyle Busch

Race Winner - Kevin Harvick

Fantasy Football Starts/Sits (Week 5)

Welcome to TimersSports

Last week wasn't a very productive outing. Only correctly predicting 12 of 21 (53 for 83 after 4 weeks) , so it was a bit crazy with 6 teams on bye. In week 5 , there so many questions to be answer. Can disappointed studs rebound? Will hot unknowns continue to live the glory? That and much more. Let dig in!

*Scoring is based off CBS Sports standard scoring

Starts -

Quarterbacks:

Phillip Rivers: Rivers have started the season off very well. Scoring multiple Touchdowns in the past 3 games. While ranking near the top in fantasy points. Over his first 4 games , Rivers have averaged 25.5 points per game. While posting 288.7 yards , 2.2 Touchdowns,  and 0.2 Interceptions per game.  Very good numbers which should continue against the Jets. Jets have allowed 25.5 fantasy points per game (3rd-most) and have given up 253.7 , 2.2 TDs , and 0.0 Interceptions per game.

Russell Wilson: Wilson have scored around 23 fantasy points per game in 3 starts in 2014.  Washington defense vs Quarterbacks have been fantasy owners best friend. In week 4 ,they allowed 5 TDs vs Eli Manning. In 4 games , Washington ranked 4th in fantasy points allowed 25.4 against Quarterbacks. While allowing 256 yards , 2.2 Touchdowns , and 0.5 Interceptions per game. Wilson should make them look silly on Monday night.

Big Ben: Big Ben owners get a fantastic matchup vs fantasy football worst defense. Jacksonville have allowed the most fantasy points against Quarterbacks. While allowing 29.6 fantasy points , 344.2 yards , 2.7 TDs , and 0.2 Interceptions. Big Ben have scored multiple times in each of his last 2 games. While scoring least two touchdowns in his last 5 of 6 road contests.

Running Backs -

Rashad Jennings: In week 4 , it was a lot of passing done for New York. Especially since Washington shut down NYG run game early. In week 5 , Atlanta next on the schedule. In 4 games , Atlanta ranks number 1 in points allows against running backs. They have allowed 31.1 ppg , 135.2 yards and 2 TDs per game. Jennings ranked 5th among backs with 13.3 fantasy points  per game. While posting 341 yards and 2 TDs in 4 games.

Matt Asiata: Asisata for now holds the starting role , but for how long is in question. Especially with rookie Jerick McKinnon relevant in Minnesota. Nevertheless he get a fantastic matchup against Green Bay on Thursday. Green Bay run defense ranks 3rd in points allowed to running back. While allowing 25.2 fantasy points per game (4th most) and allowing least 1TD in every home game this season. Asiata ranked 9th in total fantasy points. While averaging 12.8 per game game.

Gio Bernard: New England have allowed 5th most points against running back. While allowing 24.3 fantasy points, 125.5 yards and 0.5 TDs per game. Also it noticeable that New England have allowed 4 TDs against running backs in receiving. Gio Bernard have 12 catches (4 receptions per games) for 148 yards. Just added value.

Wide Receivers -

Vincent Jackson: Jackson get a great matchup vs New Orleans. The Saints defense have allowed the 5th most points to Wide Receivers. While allowing 193.2 yards and 5 TDs. On average the Saints are are allowing 26.2 fantasy points. Jackson have scored in back to back games. Expect Glennon throw a lot. And Jackson is the only reliable guy in Tampa.

Michael Crabtree: Crabtree is easily the top target in San Fran offense. Especially with Davis getting banged up again against Eagles. In week 5 , Kansas City comes to town. So far in 2014 , KC have allowed the 13th most fantasy points per game. Crabtree have scored in 2 of the last 3 games.

Jordy Nelson: Nelson is the league best Wide Receiver. It pretty easy to be a top Wide out with the league best Quarterback on the team. Nelson leads the league in targets (49) , receptions (33) , yardage (459) and 2nd in fantasy points per game (16.0). Vikings has allowed the 15th most fantasy points to Wide Receivers.

Tight Ends -

Martellus Bennett: Bennett won't keep this pace not a chance. But his recent success is very promising. Bennett ranks number 1 among Tight Ends after 4 games. Including 37 targets , 29 receptions , 295 yards and 4 TDs. Carolina appears to be tough on Tight Ends so far in 2014. But don't count on them to hold Bennett to 5.7 fantasy points.

Heath Miller: Miller finally had a good game and now have a fantastic matchup against the Jacksonville Jags. Jacksonville have allowed the 2nd most fantasy points against Tight Ends. Jacksonville have allowed 4 Touchdowns in 4 games.

Sit -

Quarterbacks:

Cam Newton: Chicago have allowed the 8th most fantasy points to Quarterbacks. But it should be noted Aaron Rodgers is a big reason for that. Chicago isn't that bad. In fact , they have force 6 interceptions in the first 3 games (excluding week 4 vs Green Bay) and that ranked T- 2nd best in the NFL behind only the Giants. Newton have only produced 3 TDs in 3 starts. With 243 yards/per game and 11 yards rushing/ per game. Not exactly starting numbers.

Tom Brady: Brady will forever be considered a great teammate and great quarterback. But he is no longer fantasy relevant for us fantasy owners. In 4 games in 2014 , Brady have averaged 11.3 fantasy points/ per game. Ranked 25th of quarterbacks. 5 Quarterback with 3 starts have outscored Brady as well. Cincy have allowed the fewest points  against Quarterbacks. They have allowed 254 yards , 0.6 TDs , and  2 Interceptions per game.

Kirk Cousins: Seahawks haven't been elite basing off the numbers. But Kirk Cousins isn't exactly elite himself. Remember last week against Giants? Yeah me too. If Cousins cannot handle an average defense , then he could in for a long Monday evening.

Running Backs -

Stevan Ridley: The Pats O-line is pretty bad. Ridley and co could struggle to produce yards against a very stout defense against the run. Cincy have allowed 14.1 fantasy points/ per game to running back. I don't feel confident at all. Ridley ranked 33rd in fantasy points scored at the running back position.

Chris Johnson: Good matchup , but Johnson have had a few good matchups this season. Unfortunately he failed to take advantage in every situation. In 4 games this season , Johnson only have 167 yards on 41 carries (4.0 average yard per carry.) Chris Ivory have 273 yards on 50 carries (5.4 average yards per carry.) Also expect Jets to pass a lot since they will likely be playing from behind.

Donald Brown: How did Brown manage to screw up a matchup against Jacksonville? Well if it gonna happen , Brown bound to accomplish it. In week 5 , Brown have a very unfavorable matchup. The Jets have allowed the fewest fantasy points ( 7.7 per game.) Donald Brown is unlikely to do much. Even if the Chargers have a huge lead in the second half.

Wide Receivers -

Sammy Watkins: Watkins scored last week. But week 5 bound to be a little more challenging for the rookie wideout. The Lions only have allowed little over 100 yards per game in 2014. They ranked 31th in fantasy points allowed. It also worth knowing there a new starting QB in Buffalo.

Torrey Smith: Smith broke out in week 4 against Carolina. But it could be short lived against a Colts secondary who ranked among top 5 in least fantasy points allowed. It well documented that the Colts defense haven't played many great Wide Outs. With that being said , Smith is no longer the top target for Flacco. Lower your expectations.

Tight Ends -

Larry Donnell: If you started Donnell against New York , well good job. Unfortunately Larry may not come out looking as pretty against Atlanta in week 5. Atlanta have allowed the 4th fewest fantasy points to Tight Ends. Donnell true value could  be depended on his TDs rate.

Dwayne Allen: The Colts know to use their Tight Ends very effectively. But the Ravens have allowed the fewest fantasy points to Tight Ends (3.0  average fantasy points) and have allowed 0 TDs. Allen have only 15 receptions for 145 yards in 4 games. His TDs could be the different between a good and bad play.
